What Are Type Matchups in Pokémon GO?
Updated
Pokémon GO uses different numbers from the main games, and it has no immunities at all. Getting this right is worth more than powering anything up.
The five outcomes
| Outcome | Damage | When |
|---|---|---|
| Super effective | 1.6× | One matching weakness. |
| Doubly super effective | 2.56× | Both halves of a dual type are weak to it. |
| Neutral | 1× | Nothing either way. |
| Not very effective | 0.625× | One resistance. |
| Doubly resisted | 0.39× | Both halves resist. Still lands, unlike the main games. |
Dual types multiply
Each half is checked separately and the two multipliers are multiplied. So Ice against Dragon and Ground lands 1.6 × 1.6 = 2.56×, which is why an Ice attacker flattens Garchomp. The same maths runs the other way: a type both halves resist does 0.625 × 0.625 = 0.39×.

Picking a counter
Open the species page for whatever you are fighting: it lists what it takes double damage from, then ranks the attackers that exploit it. The best attackers page has the strongest option of every type, and the full type chart has every multiplier.
Every multiplier here is read from the game's own type table, not from the main series, where the numbers differ.
Questions people ask
What are type matchups in Pokémon GO?
Every move has a type and every Pokémon has one or two. The move's type against the target's sets a damage multiplier, and picking the right one is worth more than powering anything up. There are 18 types.
What is the super effective multiplier in Pokémon GO?
1.6×, not the 2× the main games use. Resisted is 0.625×. Those are the numbers in the game's own type table.
Why do some Pokémon take 2.56× damage?
Each half of a dual type is checked separately and the two multipliers are multiplied. Both halves weak to the same thing gives 1.6 × 1.6 = 2.56×. Ice against Garchomp, which is Dragon and Ground, is the worked example on this page.
Are there any type immunities in Pokémon GO?
No. The lowest multiplier in the game's table is 0.39×, when both halves resist. Even the matchups the main games make immune, like Electric against Ground, still land here.
Which typing takes the most damage in Pokémon GO?
10 dual typings take 2.56× from 2 different attacking types, which is the most any typing is exposed to. Bug and Grass is one of them: Fire and Flying both hit it for 2.56×. All 10 are listed above.
Does STAB work in Pokémon GO?
Yes. A move matching one of the attacker's own types is multiplied by 1.2×, and that is the bonus every damage number on this site is computed with.
How do I find the counter to a Pokémon?
Open its species page: it lists what the Pokémon takes double damage from and then ranks the attackers that exploit it. The best attackers page has the strongest option of every type.
